Food and Mood

Torbay Food and Mood Workshop

The role of the Healthy Eating Ambassadors was to work alongside the Foyer Federation, Foyers and young people to ensure that our healthy eating initiatives not only make an impact on young people in Foyers and their food choices over the course of the programme, but also make a longer term impact on the policy and evidence base concerning increasing access to a healthy diet for disadvantaged youth. We recruited three Healthy Eating Ambassadors:

Jessica Mitchell – The Food Commission
Simon Boyle – Beyond Boyle
Jenny Sansom – Sustain

10 Food and Mood workshops were run by Sustain, and a total of 96 Foyer staff and residents participated in the programme.

To find out more about Sustain click here: http://www.sustainweb.org/

The 2 main aims of the workshop were to:

Increase the knowledge of Foyer staff about the links between diet and mood and equip and provide information on residents.

Make Foyer residents aware of the benefits food can have on how they feel, and equip them with food related skills.

Workshop programme

  • Residents introduced themselves and said what they had for breakfast. Healthy snacks (fruit, raw veg, brown pitta breads and dips etc) were provided for the residents to snack on

  • Discussion on Food and Mood – getting residents to acknowledge the link between food and mood, and that making good food choices will have a positive effect on their emotions
  • Food groups and the giant food and mood plate – young people interact with the plate placing different foods in the right section (protein, starchy food, good fats, bad fats, fruit and veg), therefore displaying a balanced diet
  • Caffeine quiz (link will be posted at a later date, watch this space!)
  • Blood Sugar Balancing – Balancing blood sugar is a really vital element of how food can affect our mood – the group looked a the difference between slow burn and fast burn food
  • Cooking a meal together and eating together

  • Many residents learned new skills such as chopping and preparing vegetables and spices

  • Visit to a place where healthy food comes from such as organic farm or an allotment – Torbay Foyer spent the afternoon at an Organic Farm and picked and sampled various fruit, vegetables and flowers

What did Torbay Foyer residents think of the Organic Farm visit?

"I will buy organic veg and grow my own veg from now on."
"I will eat breakfast more often and eat more healthily."
"I will try to eat more wholegrain food."
"I will take care of myself."
"I am now not afraid of eating organic food."
