Cooking, eating and socialising at Salford Foyer

Salford Foyer launched the Cookery Sessions on Salford Foyer’s Community Involvement Day.

Residents met Sir Richard Brandson and used lots of kitchen freebies, donated by Virgin Medistaff, to construct a kitchen sculpture at Virgin Media.

“The Cooking Sessions were so popular that at times some residents had to be turned away! I have thoroughly enjoyed delivering the cookery sessions and managing the project. Salford Foyer has a great bunch of keen young people and it has been really rewarding following their progress and development not only with their culinary skills but also with their knowledge and self-confidence in general. It has been a real pleasure working with our volunteer Sarah and all the Salford Foyer staff. Thanks to you all for your cooperation, support and hard work.” Rahela Khan, Health Champion Salford Foyer.

What happened at each Cooking Session?

Residents learnt about health, hygiene and safety in the kitcken, as well as budgeting and nutrition at each session.
The sessions were varied and exciting and took preferences and dietary needs into account. They ranged from ‘Everyday Cookery’ and ‘Make It and Eat It’ to ‘2-Course Cookery’ and ‘International Cookery’ sessions.

What else did the young people do?

The young people have put together a photo album of the sessions and used their creativity to brighten up the kitchen, with a collage of dried ingredients and a food poem.

Kitchen Library and Kitchen Checks

The Kitchen Library has been a big success and the young people are regularly borrowing utensils, dishes and books. Everyone has cooperated with the Monthly Larder Check and the Weekly Fridge Check.

The team is proud to say that the Weekly Fridge Check is done every week without fail and that they hope to include both kitchen checks in the New Resident’s pack.
